► Greetings, Travelers!
Welcome to the first month of Summer's End! This will be the beginning of future rundowns highlighting the current month's events of the game. While it'll seem like we're getting a light start, there will still be plenty to go over, including what in the hell is going on, and why you're here.
From now on, announcements such as these will be made on the 1st of the month, so be on the lookout for them!
▼ Part I. New Guests;
On July 10th, characters arriving on day 1 will find themselves caught in the midst of a furious amber storm. Those in perfect health will enter through a rift anywhere on the island, be it outdoors or inside the Celestial Hotel or Elysian Lodge. Even the coldest reaches will be plagued by bright flashing orange lights and a downpour of hail and frozen rain, while locations farther south will be more tropical and temperate, but treacherous nevertheless.
After 24 hours, the storm will pass, allowing a clear passage to the paths or roads all over the island. Some establishments vehicles are stocked with vehicles to make the trip safer and easier than on foot, provided they know how to drive. Characters will quickly find that any attempts to contact the outside world is fruitless, and leaving the island to be even more dangerous than staying put for now -- especially at nightfall, when the burning horizon of the world on fire holds dark implications...
At the M.A.S.A.D.A. Complex, characters will be waking up at the tail end of the storm, and soon find themselves at a high-tech facility where they are greeted by an AI calling herself IRIS. The ORIENTATION.exe program executed at the M.A.S.A.D.A. Complex will also be available on any communications device connected to the island network, and will even learn that the name of their little so-called pocket paradise is called "La Huerta".
Once the storm settles completely on July 11th, those who attempt to explore the island will quickly find it almost completely desolate, with only the AI and helper bots left. While there's plenty of evidence of human habitation at one point -- from their abandoned luggage to thousands of names checked in at the hotel and resort lobbies -- it'll become quickly obvious that those that remain only have each other... for now.
Though not completely devoid of life, the fauna will be notably aggressive and skittish in the face of strangers. You are weird creatures to them, after all, and while some will perceive you as threats, others will view you as prey.
▼ Part II. Please sir, may I have some spore?
The animals aren't the only things disturbed by recent events. After a few weeks, starting on July 25th the plants will begin reacting to the sudden influx of arrivals and the rifts that have disrupted the environment. Characters will find themselves being influenced by the spores the plants are giving off, particularly ones found all over La Huerta.
The effects will vary based on which plant they are near, and some don't need to be physically interacted with in order to trigger its effects. Which isn't normal -- but then, nothing about this place is.
The plants don't have technical names and aren't found in IRIS' database (but characters are free to give them one). A list of the species emitting spores and their effects are as follows: ► Rose Cabbage; A budding vegetable that gives off a strong sense of apathy and repose, depriving one's sense of self-preservation. These can be found anywhere on the island, but are more scarce up north.
► Flowering Lily Pads; Beautiful aquatic plants found in lakes, rivers, and ponds that emanate a sweet aroma, inspiring giddiness and glee. So much so that the one affected will burst into fits of uncontrollable giggles and laughter to the point of tears.
► Bright Bulbs; Bioluminescent ground plants that light up the darkest forests in the night. A comfort at first, but when one comes close, they begin an eerie hum that elicits a sense of dread and paranoia, and shift to more ominous shades of red and blue in your panic. May cause distrust and auditory hallucinations.
► Prickly Groundcone; Contact with the sharp ends will cause your entire body to go numb with pins and needles for up to 2 hours. Harmless but irritating. Located anywhere on the island.
► Apple Peppers; Though edible, interacting with these spicy jungle fruits at this time will cause them to trigger a self-defense mechanism that sends its victim into an irrational anger. It can range from being irritable to blind rage over the slightest annoyance.
► Dreaming Vines; Glowing vines that can be found on trees and emerging from the earth. Going near them will cause mild hallucinations, as though daydreaming. While possible to break out of the dream, the lure of the vines' influence will result in pleasant experiences and therefore make it difficult to return to lucidity. Located in the central and southern jungle and forest.
► Weeping Blue; A decorative but morose plant that causes violent sobbing for up to 1 hour. Located in the jungle and forest. ► Unroots; Found almost anywhere on the island, close contact with these plants will cause temporary paralysis of the body's lower nervous system for a short period of time. While upper body and motor functions remain intact, the lower half will be as if "rooted" to the ground. For the most part, characters will quickly build an immunity to the spores these plants are giving off. While the effects are all temporary and last no more than a few hours, they can prove dangerous depending on where they are.
▼ Part III. Lost in transmission;
Despite there being no sign of intelligent life -- aside from the AI, that is -- there will be a broadcast to all communications devices from an unknown source on July 29th, indicating that they are not alone. Who it's from and what it will mean for our arrivals is a mystery, so stay tuned!
► Notes
► First off: Feel free to use this post for plotting!
► Remember: Characters do not arrive with access to the network. However, once they find a mobile device or computer, they are prompted to set up an account. More info on that can be found here. You may also handwave your character finding a device and just hop into it.
► July 10th: Game launch. ► July 11th: Storm clears, and characters are free to wander the island in (somewhat) clear weather. ► July 25th: Plantlife will begin to react to the influx of arrivals and disturbances from the rifts and emit spores with varying effects, affecting those who interact or go near them. ► July 29th: A mysterious message will broadcast on the island network.
► For its launch, AC will not be required for the first month of the game!
